Description:  It is one of the prominent structures in the optic lobe lying anteriorly to the lobula plate and medially to the medulla. The entire neuropil consists of 6 distinct layers. It also houses many distal terminals of higher-order visual neurons projecting to the cerebrum, especially some parts of the VLNP including the AOTU, VLP and PLP.
